Controlling the Lesser Grain Borer

Lesser grain bores in corn

At Bug Free Grains, we’re always striving to provide the best protection possible for stored grain, from commercial elevators to on-farm. That means not only providing producers with effective solutions, but also providing the information needed to protect stored grain from damaging insects.

To that end, we conducted a study on potential losses due to infestation by the Lesser Grain Borer (Rhyzopertha dominica). These tiny but voracious feeders can cause significant damage if not properly controlled. In this blog, we break down the findings of the study, with takeaways on which products can be used to protect against the Lesser Grain Borer.

Significant Differences Between Treated and Untreated Samples

The purpose of our study was to determine potential losses due to infestation of stored rough rice by the lesser grain borer, and the efficacy of Centynal™ EC Insecticide against these insects when used as a grain protectant. Data was analyzed using analysis of variance, and the least significant difference (LSD) test was used to compare means.

Our research involved 5 replications and detailed statistical analysis, which highlighted significant differences between treated and untreated samples:

  • 4.2% loss in weight for untreated rough rice vs. treated after 120 days of infestation.
  • 5.2% reduction in milling yield percentage of untreated milled rice vs. treated after 120 days of infestation.
  • The lesser grain borer population grew 960% over 120 days.

These findings underscore the critical importance of using effective grain protectants like Centynal™ EC Insecticide to mitigate the impact of pests on stored rice. By doing so, we can significantly reduce weight loss, maintain higher milling yields, and control pest population growth, ensuring the quality and profitability of stored rice.

More Control Tips for Lesser Grain Borers

Effective control of Lesser Grain Borers involves a combination of preventive measures and treatments. At Bug Free Grains, we take a comprehensive approach to control, offering solutions every step of the way:

  • Pre-Bin Treatments: To effectively manage Lesser Grain Borers, it is crucial to clean and treat grain bins before storing grain. We recommend using Gravista® Insecticide, a comprehensive product that includes an insect growth regulator, an adulticide, and a synergist. Consider using the dry-formulated Gravista®-D Insecticide for on-farm storage or in areas where water is scarce.
  • Longer-term treatments (six months or more):
    • Inspect and treat incoming grain with Gravista® Insecticide or Gravista®-D Insecticide.
    • Continuously monitor the grain throughout the storage period to detect any signs of infestation early.
  • For shorter storage periods (six months or less), or rescue treatments:

By implementing proper prevention and control methods, Lesser Grain Borers can be managed effectively. Understanding their characteristics, life cycles, and signs of infestation is the first step in keeping post-harvest stored grain free from insect damage.
