Stored Grain Protection Solutions for Every Season

Three combines pour grain into one truck hopper at harvest

As grain markets continue to fluctuate, many Midwest farmers are turning to on-farm storage to manage their crops, resulting in increasing grain storage across the region, especially in the I-states and Ohio. And it’s not just grains from this year’s harvest that needs protecting. Stored grain has been a central concern throughout the 2024 growing season, especially after market prices began to drop sharply in December 2023. The ongoing price decline has slowed grain sales, leaving record amounts of production still in storage.

This year, the combination of volatile market prices and larger carryovers from last year’s harvest has created an even greater need for effective grain storage solutions. Reports from CoBank show that farmers' reluctance to sell has led to higher storage fees at elevators as well, pushing more producers toward storing grain on their farms. However, this approach comes with risks, including the threat of insect damage, which can result in dockage as high as 18%* according to research conducted by the Bug Free Grains team. (Check out our blog on the value of a stored grain insect control program here, and our video on reducing shrink here.)

Farmers are also dealing with increased pressure to move their grain stocks, which can exacerbate insect problems. For those choosing to store grain longer, an insect protection plan is critical to preserving quality. Without effective protection, infestations can cause significant financial losses.

That's where Bug Free Grains steps in with a lineup of solutions that work to proactively protect post-harvest grains from the damage and loss caused by insects. Here are just a few of those valuable solutions:

  • Gravista®-D Insecticide is a powerful, dry-formulated solution specifically designed for on-farm grain storage, inclusive of an adulticide, an insect growth regulator (IGR) and a synergist. Whether you’re holding out for better prices or managing larger carryovers, Gravista®-D can help reduce shrinkage from insect damage and deliver up to a 3:1 return on investment*.
  • If you prefer liquid products, you’re in luck - Gravista® Insecticide is a liquid combination product that also kills labeled insects and breaks their life cycles, featuring 3-in-1 insect control with an adulticide, an IGR and a synergist. Both products provide excellent control of Indian meal moths, sawtoothed grain beetles, red flour beetles, rice weevils, maize weevils, lesser grain borers, and other listed pests.
  • For those dealing with existing infestations, Centynal™ Synergized Insecticide is an effective rescue solution. Designed for short-term grain storage and rescue treatments, Centynal™ Synergized brings together both an adulticide and a synergist to deliver a powerful knockdown, even against the toughest stored product insects.

It's more important than ever to protect every bushel. With our lineup of IGRs, adulticides, and synergists, the Bug Free Grains team provides comprehensive solutions that help protect both on-farm and commercially stored grain at every step of the storage process.
